Hello!
I am an exchange student at York this spring, and I'd be quite interested in joining your society. I can't seem to find any information on how to do this on your website, and I'm not entirely sure which parts of it are up to date, so I thought I'd just ask for directions here. Where might I find out more?
Thanks, Erlend

The socials are in Derwent Bar every Thursday from about 8pm. A member of the society also brings along a banner that says "Science Fiction and Fantasy" to help people find the group. There is usually a good group of us by 8.30pm so we are not too hard to find.
Another good place to find more information is here. If you need a general over view of what there is then: [Sorry if I miss anything]
-Social where we get together. -Boardgames night. -Magic and other such card games (other people know more). -Table top roleplay games. -LARP (Live Action Roleplaying). -Some interest in Wargaming. -A library full of books.
If you have any questions about any of those, or anything else, either pop along to a social to find us or ask some more on here. We will try to be helpful.

Hi all.
I was pointed in this direction as a potential for finding a gaming group. I'm not a student at the university (I graduated down south) and therefore I don't know where the Derwent Bar is, or whether I'm even able to get in without university identification. (I don't currently have, but could obtain, an NUS membership card if that makes any difference).
Is anyone able to give me a little more detail around where I need to go and/or who I need to talk to?

SF&F has a large number of non-student members, so there's no need for an NUS card.
Derwent bar is in Derwent College, which is the one furthest towards Heslington (am I right there? It's definitely the one next to Heslington Hall!) I'm pretty sure there are signposts on campus.
As for joining, you'd need to grab one of the committee. There is a fee (I can't remember it) but you do get a card which gives you 10% off all RPGs (and Board Games?) at Travelling Man in town, and I believe some kind of discount with Jorvik Games online. It also means that you're insured if you decide to try LARP, and can therefore be allowed outside to hit people with foam weapons.
Committee people active on these forums would be koloth, terelion and toph, I believe.

The discount is just for rpgs at travelling man and we get 10% off everything from jorvik games. The fee to join is £5 and you also get access to the society library which our kit officer will bravely enter once a month to retrieve and drop off books.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll be coming in from Haxby - is it possible to park on campus, or is there parking available nearby?

More to the point, parking in the pay-and-display car-parks on campus is free in the evenings.

I came to the social last week, and had a great time. Would have come yesterday, if the bus had deigned to stop for me. Will try to show up next week, looking to join the society for reals.
