Hi, I'm Tom, and I was at the convention this term, but LARPers probably know me already. I was just wondering if anyone out there was interested in getting together to play wargames (Warhammer fantasy especially.) As I'm a fresher, I don't know if theres an established wargaming community associated with the society, so if there is, just point me in the right direction. Many Thanks

SF&F in York has always had problems getting wargames to run regularly and openly. Models are difficult to transport, first from elsewhere in the country to York, and then from your home to a place with a good table for playing on. Those people who would play, but can't because they didn't bring their models, usually can't get ahold of spare models from other people, because no one can afford that many of the d**n things.
Because of the difficulties, we get a few people each year who're interested, but when nothing happens, their interest wanes, and they either disappear, or get into other things.
Like I say to everyone when this happens, every year, try organising something some night of the week, advertise, make sure you've got at least one guaranteed person other than you to turn up, and just do it until it's going regularly.

There is a games workshop shop in York, but when I went along, they were pretyy hostile to people they didn't know. May have changed in 5 years though. I might be willing to have the occasional game, but I'll have to relearn the rules.
Mordheim is also good, you'll likely get more people interested in that.

I'd be happy to get involved. I've not done anything with the SF & F soc yet, but wargaming is my thing. Unfortunately I don't have an army with me at the moment, I've got a necromunda gang (if anyone is doing anything necromunda based, give me a shout). But if there's some interest then next term I can bring a small army (and a mordheim gang if anyone wants to do that, though I haven't played much).

I have Mordheim terrain, and much in the way of WHFB stuff usable for Mordheim. My Mordheim rulebook got nicked at one of the conventions though, so I'm a little short on rules.

I am up for warhammer as well, but i also have left my armies at home. I have a dwarf army of about 1000pts which i could bring up next term if any would want to play me. I prefer 40K though, i have 5000pts of space wolves and 2500pts of imperial guard, including a plastic baneblade which i actually have with me. Although i don't have many models with me i would love to watch a game that is being played. But next term i would definetly like to play a few people. Anyone up for a game of 40k apocalyspse next term?

It's nice to see so much intrest, i didn't really expect anyone to reply. As for specialist games, GW has made all the rules for specialist games (morheim, battlefleet gothic, blood bowl etc) availiable for free online. Yes, you heard me correctly, GW is giving stuff that it could easily charge for, away free. Unless anyone lives in York and has a gaming table already up here, I think a mass trip to Games Workshop to play on their tables (Tuesdays are Veteran nights I think) might be possible.

How big is the York GW? I've not actually been in yet, but it looks fairly small from the outside (maybe it's tardis like). Surely we could get some of the specialist games going on campus somewhere (tables don't need to be so big), the only problem I can see is storing/transporting scenery (and of course actually booking a room). I might go off for a wander and check out the GW in the next few days.

For Mordheim stuff, I don't live too far from campus, and don't mind carrying it, although it's only the stuff from the box and the extra couple of bits they released after that.
I think I know of some people who have recently restarted playing 40k. I'll try poking them onto here to add to this discussion.

A room can be booked on campus for you, if you'd like. There are a few with tables (that if not large enough can be pushed together).

I went into the GW in York today to have a chat and discovered a man who must be GW's quietest employee ever. He didn't seem very enthusiastic to have me there (as Kami of tea said), but they're open 10-6 Monday- Saturday except Thursday when they're open till 8 for "gaming night". They have 3 tables down there (not much, I'm used to GW's with entire gaming rooms), so there you go.

I think booking a room sounds like a good idea and as for the apocalypse game, I'll be all for that next term when I have my 40k army with me.
