Heya. =)
I'm actually a graduate from Leeds, planning to hopefully do a masters next year at your beautiful university. If end up at York I will definately be joining if possible. I still live in Leeds and will continue to do so but if I'm commuting up for uni might as well get some games in, right?
I play wargames, desperately looking for Warmachine / IK players if possible; despise Magic; love RPGs of both paper and PC variety, especially Cthulhu/D&D/Etherscope to name a few; I also enjoy boardgames from Arkham to TI 3 to Metropolis. I am sorry to admit that I am also quite, quite addicted to WAR (but not WOW, so that makes it okay.)
There is a scifi soc at Leeds Uni, which you would think should be pretty good considering how large leeds and leeds uni is, but actually it's pretty dead these days. The pool is roleplayers in Leeds is disappointingly small, and overall the leeds soc's attitude towards boardgames ranges from mildly disapproving to alarmingly hostile. So basically I'd like a friendly(er) place to play games and a bigger pool of potential rpg'ers =)
Cheers and such things.

As you may have discovered, York SF&F have a boardgames evening (currently Mondays). There are a lot of people here who enjoy running/playing tabletop RPGs, so I doubt you'd have a problem finding people for a game. There are also a few wargamers - I believe there was once a wargaming night, don't know if there still is but there are certainly people who would be interested.

Would be interesting to see how people I've not taught to play Twiglet (local name for TI3) play the game sometime : )
EDIT:: Wah, didn't realise I was logged on as Gemma. This is Paul / favouredenemy

Sounds good. Now I just need to work out a reasonably affordable way to get to York every now and then =)

Train is surprisingly affordable, as long as you're not going in commuting hours.

If you want board games there is a game club that runs every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month right next the the train station in York. It is not a uni thing but if you like board games it is worth heading over for.
If you want to head over for a Monday night my partner works in Leeds and could drive you to York and we can drop you at the train station at the end but you would have to arrange getting a train back to Leeds and I am not sure when they run to.

Trains to leeds go until the early hours. If I remember right they're fairly regular til about 12/ 1am, then there's a couple more before 3 at odd hours. You can use a day return on those trains so long as its before 6am the next day, they don't stop at midnight

many thanks for the kind responses =)
well - I have been up to york a few times (most recently to see the head of my hopefully-future msc), I suppose I'm more concerned with the cost in the long run, ie going to uni on a weekly basis. that will run me a minimum of 110 a month, probably more like 150 a month. Sigh. However, that is a whole different travel issue altogether, really. Will try to make it up sometime in the near future funds allowing, though.
so out of curiosity any of york scifi soc going to eastercon LX 2009 down in bradford? the leeds soc here is going (I think) and a few various peoples I know. No idea if you guys go to these sorts of thing or not etc.
